Past racing exploits of our club members and followers here and abroad.
Ivan Hoey at Wakefield Park PCRA round 6Club member Ivan Hoey won the P4 750 class at round 6 of the PCRA championships this weekend at Wakefield Park. He also managed to finish second in the P4 Unlimited class. This rounds out the season for Ivan with first place finishes in both classes for 2015. Well done Ivan!!! Southern Classic 2015Stacey Heaney finished fourth in the points riding Rob McKie's XS650 racer with a best time for the meeting of 1:12:607 in the Southern Classic at Broadford, well done Stacey. Australian Historic Championships 2015The Australian Historic Championships were held this weekend (October 10-11) at Mallala in South Australia and our own Ivan Hoey went along to compete. According to Natsoft results Ivan got a 5th place in P4 Unlimited and a 5th place P4 750cc Class. Not a bad result when you look at the opposition he faced and take into consideration that he has never raced there before. Well done to Ivan and his sponsor Geoff's XS. Thanks to Russell Tovey Photography for the pic. Ivan at Mallala 2015 N.S.W. Road Race Championships 11/7/15AT the end of Saturdays racing Ivan was in second place according to Natsoft data in P4 unlimited class. By Sunday he had progressed by consistent effort into first place. Very well done Ivan and thanks also to his sponsor Geoff's XS

Southern Classic at BroadfordA very
successful weekend for Ivan with a
fourth place overall and for Stacey a
disappointing result with two missed
races with technical problems in the
second race and a program change causing
her to miss the third race as well.
Many club members called
in to wish the riders well. Videos of
race 3 & 4 on
the video page. Ivan also managed to
finish the year off with both the
Australian and N.S.W. Post Classic

Murray Bridge Historic Sidecar CrossFormer club member, Matthew Moloney, competed at Murray Bridge last weekend (26/10/14) in historic sidecar cross and with the help of his passenger Ben Gerrits won all six of the races they entered. Well done Matt and Ben. Matt's bikes, L - R Two stroke 500cc Jumbo, XS953cc stroked 90° rephased EML & 840cc 90° rephased Wasp |
2014 Bulk Nutrients Official Australian Elite Sidecar Cross TitleTwo weeks ago (19/10/14) Matthew Moloney and passenger Ben Gerrits competed in the 2014 Bulk Nutrients Official Australian Elite Sidecar Cross Title at Horsham finishing in eighth place overall against modern bikes with his XS powered sidecar. |
Australian Title29/9/14 Ivan Hoey riding his XS650 Yamaha #72 today won the Australian title for Period 4 historic motorcycles at the Lakeside raceway in Queensland. Well done Ivan. The last time an XS650 won the Australian Period 4 title was when Sam Muldoon won it in 2011 in Tasmania. - Terry Gliddon Pre-85 Sidecar Cross Australian TitlesThis weekend hosted the Australian Titles for pre-85 sidecar cross in Toowoomba QLD and former club member Matthew Moloney and passenger David Rotheram cleaned up the opposition to gain the number one plate amid stiff competition. Matt has competed in the Australian titles on several occasions with many podium places but this is the first time he has finished in first place. I am sure we all congratulate them for this effort, well done Matt and Dave. Matt’s new bike has an EML frame and is powered by a stroked 953cc 270° rephased XS650 engine built by Matt and uses much of the technology employed in our club racer. Matt now lives in Moranbah but was an eager member of the club racer team when he lived in Victoria. New Racer Ready to RollClub member Rob McKie has finally finished his racer and is going to take it to Broadford next week for its shakedown run to make sure everything is ok. Rob hasn't raced for a few years now and can't wait to put his leathers on again. He was inspired to go racing again after finding out what could be done to the XS650 after discovering our website and joining the club. Rob's modernized
motor will be quite a step up from the
stock configuration he ran a decade ago. I have to tell you the bike sounds great and when Kev sends me the film footage he took I will post it here so you can hear it for yourselves. As promised here is the video of Rob's racer Update 16/5/2013 Rob has entered the bike for it's first full race meeting at Winton on the 25/5/2013 and is to be ridden by Stacy Heaney. Stacy took it out for a shakedown ride at Broadford and is looking forward to going racing on it. Rob is finally happy that the bike is ready to rumble. Look for a full report at the end of the month. |
Club Racer? In a recent article in the Motorcycle Trader Magazine on “girls only track days”, this picture of Stacey Heaney on club member Rob McKie’s XS650 racer appeared. Stacey has been riding Rob’s XS for quite a while now and really enjoys the experience, she also had the opportunity to ride Ivan Hoey’s racer at the last Broadford Bonanza and was very impressed with Ivan’s bike as well. If we can sign her up as a club member I wonder if she would like to ride the club racer? - Terry Gliddon Australian Title goes to Sam MuldoonThe Australian road racing titles were held in Tasmania last weekend and Sam Muldoon won the period 4 unlimited title against the best bikes in Oz. Well done Sam, the XS650 Club of Australia congratulates you and your dad Mick for your efforts. - 2011 Peter Lee in the USAHi Terry, Just a quick note. I have been in the states riding in the AMA Vintage Dirt-Track series. I rode at the Vintage Days in Ohio and at Du Quoin half- mile and on the magic mile, on a Rickman Yamaha 650.Finished 2nd in Ohio and 1st in Du Quoin in the 750 Hot shoe. Had a great trip kindly looked after by Bill Davis from Texas (supplied the bike and toy hauler plus Dodge). Also did the Kansas fair series where got second overall in the 750 class/ 4 rounds in Kansas. Some of your members
may remember me, I have been to Geoff's

Conditioning Naracoorte MCC hosted the two day meeting on November 6th and 7th which produced some of the best sidecar racing seen for a long time. Club members had put in many hours of work to get the track and facilities in tip-top condition for the major meeting on the ASA calendar. Pre 75's developed into a two horse race for top honours between reigning champs Brett Dobie/Aaron Hartwig Yamaha Wasp and young challengers Matt Maloney/Jake Madden on their awesome sounding Yammy Wasp. The guys had some good battles and unfortunately in heat 3 Matt upended the Wasp to end his day disappointed. However the Maloney/Madden team threw everything at their more experienced opponents on Sunday but just couldn't quite match the speed of the local man. Taking a well deserved third place was Victorian visitor Jeff Boyle with Chris Cowie in the chair. SA Champs Glen Wundenberg/Shane Parks had gear lever/shaft problems which eventually put them out. Well done Matt and Jake on your second place in the ASA titles Brisbane Classic Sidecar Cross Title June 13th - Matt Moloney competed in the classic sidecar cross Queensland titles here and managed a second place, not bad when you consider he hasn't ridden for a year and he has a new passenger on board. Well done Matt !!! Lismore Classic Sidecar Cross (5/7/09) I took a trip to Lismore at the weekend to watch Matt Moloney Race in the Classic Sidesar Cross. Matt did what he has done for his last few meetings and won every event. He has made a modified exhaust system for his bike since his last outing so I took some pics to show you what a great job he did. I also did a movie clip so you hear what it sounds like so click here to view it. Ivan at Oran park (13/7/08) Forgotten Era 1300cc Bikes Only 1

47 In case you are having
trouble interpreting the Natsoft results
for Oran Park, let me enlighten you, Ivan got first place Ivan also raced the YZF again for a fourth place overall. The new leathers must make a difference!!! Classic Sidecar Cross at Barrabool (29/6/08) Matt and Jake got a third, two seconds and a third at Barrabool this weekend. I was there to watch practice and the first race and got to talk to Matt between races and he said the track was very bumpy in places which did not suit the bike setup. Matt is used to running classic events and the tracks are a lot smoother than the full on motocross events. It was as cold as a witches tit on the day so I headed home and left Matt and Jake to it. Matt is racing again this weekend 13/7/08 at Lismore Classic Sidecar Cross Matt Moloney and Jake Madden raced last weekend (22/6/08) and recorded a third in the first race, a win in the second race and a second in the third race. In the last race of the day, the handicap they started last and passed almost everyone to finish second. A very successful day, well done boys. WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN That's right five wins. Ivan Hoey blitzed the field at Oran Park at the weekend with five wins, in fact he won every race he entered. Needless to say Ivan is a very happy boy and the big Yammie performed almost flawlessly all day to get his best ever result. He did have some clutch slipping problems for the first two races but after fixing it he never looked back. Well done Ivan!!! Pic taken at Wakefield Park May 2008 Sidecarcross Warnambool Matt cleaned the board at Warnambool last weekend with three first places, this now puts him in a good position to take the Victorian title. It didn't come without a hitch as he broke the gear selector shaft which had to be hastily welded together between races. Some stiff opposition also made the wins even sweeter as the old Yammie beat the more favoured late model EML machine also racing this weekend. Well done Matt and Jake!!! Sidecarcross at Gerangamete I went down to Gerangamete yesterday to watch Matt racing his sidecarcross XS650 and as usual I was late getting there and they had all stopped for lunch. Matt told me he had a first and second place as a result of his mornings racing and after lunch I watched him in the last two events he was riding in. He got another second place in the first race for the afternoon and the last race for the day was a handicap event. I must say the handicapper must have had in for Matt and as a result he only got second last for the final event. All the races for the day were only three lappers and in the last event the first away had almost completed a lap before Matt got started! Matt was cursing the handicapper for his dismal showing but he couldn't say too much as it was his dad Laurie who was the handicapper. After a hard days racing at Gerangamete Notice the new side plate made from a piece of scrap Aluminium. Matt also did a small demo in the pits after the race which I filmed. It's here if you want to take a look but it is quite a large file and will take a while to download Wakefield Park May 3rd & 4th 2008 PERIOD 5 1300cc
RIDERS As you can see from the NATSOFT results Ivan got four third places at the weekend race meeting at Wakefield Park. I spoke to Ivan briefly on Saturday night and he told me he was doing lap times a second faster than last year. His fastest lap according to NATSOFT was 1min.13.9sec on lap 2 of race 2. Well done Ivan considering he had no rear brake. Ivan also campaigned a Yamaha YZF750 at the weekend in New Era 2 and did similar lap times to the XS and finished fourth overall in that class. He will be well knackered after that effort. Tony Filmer also raced at Wakefield Park at the weekend.
Some pictures of Tony Filmers' immaculate Yamaha RD250 LC at Wakefield Park last week end. Tony had fuel problems he said he had "shit in the tank". So he only did 2 races and improved on his times and was very happy.
Classic Sidecar Cross Matt Moloney is now two meetings into his 2008 season and so far has not finished lower than second place. The first meeting of the year was at Harrow in western Victoria and Matt collected an overall first place with three firsts and a second over the four races. The next meeting at Naracoorte Matt again posted an impressive list of wins and second places in spite of the appalling conditions where it rained on an already sodden track. Many of the competitors struggled in the conditions and some had engine failures due to the heavy going. Our own Ivan Hoey and Mick Muldoon competed in the Barry Sheene Memorial race meeting at Eastern Creek and Ivan sent me some pics of the action. Ivan has just finished a rebuild of his race bike including a new look for 2008.
As you can see this includes the addition of a new fairing and white colour scheme for this year. Here's Ivan hunting down a Ducati That poor Duke didn't stand a chance against the mighty Yam Ivan did well with an overall seventh place on the weekend considering he hadn't been on the bike since last year and is still getting used to the new configuration. Mick has been having some problems with his bike but still managed to finish the weekend with a second place. Matt's Outfit Update (19/01/08) Last weekend while I was in Warrnambool to pick up a motor I had bought, I got a call from Matt Moloney and was invited to visit him and take a look at some recent modifications he had done to his racing outfit. Luckily I had my camera with me and took some pics so the rest of you blokes could take a look as well. First significant mod is the pull clutch Matt fabricated using the bits from a 750cc Honda. This mod creates a lot more free space on the other side of the motor for alternate gearing and, unlike the standard setup, cannot be damaged in the event of a chain breakage. The second significant change is to the carburation, Matt had originally fitted a Weber carb to the outfit which gave some trouble over very rough ground, the cure for this, hopefully, is to fit some nice new 36mm Dellorto pumpers. All the fabrication work for these mods was done by Matt himself and as you can see the workmanship is first class. By the way, in case you didn't already know, Matt and his new offsider Jake finished fourth in the Australian Sidecar Cross Championships held in Morgan SA just before Christmas. Not bad for his first season on a new and not quite yet sorted bike!!! Here is a picture to celebrate the event, a collage of pics taken that day and now hangs proudly in the Moloney home. Matt is now looking forward to the 2008 season which kicks off in March (I think) and I'm sure we all wish him well. Oran Park Short Circuit (29/7/07) Ivan Hoey has spent the last few weeks making some modifications to his rear suspension (see below) in preparation for his races here today with mixed results. He tells me the work done has improved the bike noticeably but had a couple of unusual problems in the first two races here today.
Modification to the rear suspension allows higher ride height and adjustability In the first race he stood the Yam up on it's tail from the start and did a monumental wheel stand causing him to lose some positions and ended up finishing in 8th place. In the second race starting from position 8 (as a result of race 1 finishing position) and stalled the bike on the starting grid finishing a lap down. The third race went well and he had a great time enjoying the bikes new found handling characteristics and in spite of starting at the rear of the grid in 24th place he eventually finished in 6th place. Ivan says the bike is now handling better than ever and he is looking forward to his next race at the Oran Park GP circuit and puts his misadventures today down to a delay when gridding up in the second race causing the engine to fuel up and stall. He thinks this can be cured with a minor jetting change. Ivan at speed taken by track photographer. Today's races combined Post Classic and Forgotten Era classes together so the grids were quite full making an interesting mix of bikes to race against including Mick Muldoon's XS650. Mick did better beating Ivan in all three races. Matt Moloney Update (20/7/07) Matt rang me the other night to let me know how he was going in sidecar racing since I saw him at Barrabool. He raced last weekend at Lismore and got a first a second and a first in his three races. He is racing this weekend at Lismore again so I'm keen to see if he has been successful in beating his previous record there and done a clean sweep of three first places. I'll let you know when I find out. Great going Matt!!! UPDATE (19/8/07) Matt rang me tonight
to tell me of his exploits this weekend
and I am happy to report three firsts
and a second. This has now been rectified and the motor is making horsepower like gangbusters according to Matt. I told Matt I will accept nothing less than a clean sweep of first places next time out!!! Well Done Matt Barrabool Classic Moto-X Sunday 24th June, Kevin Palmer and myself went to Barrabool to check out Matt Moloney race his Wasp outfit in the Classic Moto-X. Matt had a reasonable day with three thirds and a second place finish. It was a great day weather wise and we enjoyed watching Matt and Ash tear around the undulating Barrabool course. In the second race Matt flipped the Wasp and bent the rear of the frame so team XS swung into action and with some ingenious pit work and some borrowed lumps of wood and fence railings managed to straighten the frame enough for Matt to continue racing. In the third race Ash stepped off the back of the sidecar and after a couple of attempts managed to get back on and finish the race, a gutsy effort that would have frightened the crap out of me. Only his mum will ever know if it had the same effect on him. Matt has done a great job building this bike and it is a credit to him, Ash in the background looking at the track and wondering how they ever convinced him to ride chair. (I'm only pulling your leg Ash, I wouldn't get on that thing for all the tea in China) What a great choice for the racing number, 270, very fitting for a rephased motor. Weber carb is causing some problems at the moment but should be great when it's sorted. The crew, left to right, Ash (chair), Teresa (mum), Matt (trying to eat lunch and work), Laurie (dad and wheel inspector) I can't help but think what a great time Matt is going to have racing his XS powered wasp when I see his boundless enthusiasm and the fantastic support from his parents Laurie and Teresa. I also have a lot more pictures I will be putting in the members bikes section. There was another XS at Barrabool being ridden by Wayne Muir, I spoke to Wayne and he and his passenger have only just started racing themselves, this being their second time out. For novices they acquitted themselves well with a couple of second places. Matt Moloney's Debut I talked to Matt at the weekend and he debuted his XS powered wasp outfit last week and got two seconds, a third and a first place. (Not bad at all for a first time out - Toota) He is very happy with the performance of his new ride and promises to send me some pics and a short write up of his exploits. He is racing next weekend (24/6/07) at Geelong's Barabool Hills scramble track. Daryl and I will try to be there to take some pics and lend our support. For those who don't know Matt he is a new member who joined the club to get some info on the XS motor he planned to use in his new wasp outfit he acquired from another member Walter Presig. Matt wanted to know what was available in the way of hot up gear for the XS and of course we helped him out. He built a rephased 840cc motor using Mikes performance rods and Ross pistons with Weber carb and PROBE ignition and is currently considering some new primary drive gears. Oran Park The Queens Birthday weekend saw Ivan racing at Oran Park for round 3 of the Forgotten Era (and Post Classic Racing) NSW championship. I spoke to Ivan and he told me he had a great weekend of racing although not as successful as he would have liked finishing with a mid field performance. The bike ran great again but the long GP track was not suited to high placings as the opposition's bigger machinery was more suited to the higher speeds. First race had some clutch slipping problems to deal with due to an incorrect adjustment but this was fixed before the second race. Ivan also discovered that at Yamaha corner he was actually scraping the frame, this slowed him down a bit in subsequent races! He finished the day with an overall sixth or seventh place (he thinks).
Among Ivan's visitors at the track were Steve and Sally Hobbs and Tony Filmer who took the pics. One of the race officials made Ivan's day when he told him that his bike was the best twin he had ever heard. Well there aren't too many twins of 840cc capacity with a rephased crank pulling 8000 rpm around these days so he's probably right!!! Wakefield Park I'm still waiting for
a report on Wakefield Park but I'll fill
you in on what I know. Ivan's bike was
much improved after some dyno time and
the fitting of the PROBE ignition and
actually lead one race for a short time.
In his words the bike ran fantastic with
heaps of mid range horsepower and torque
and has never run better. Some of his
competitors even commented on how well
it went and wanted to know what he had
done to it. Needless to say Ivan is
chuffed and can't wait to get to Oran Park for the
next event
on June 10th
so try and be there to give Ivan some
encouragement. Here are the results after round 2 Unlimited
Post Classic Unlimited
Forgotten Era Barry Sheene Memorial Race at Eastern Creek The Barry Sheene Meeting at Eastern Creek did not go well due to many reasons, (1) I rode like a Nancy. (2) Not doing the Friday practice/testing day was a mistake, and using the 3 laps I got for qualifying to scuff in new tyres & brake pads was not the way to get a good grid position. Changing from av-gas leaded to pump 98 unleaded fuel on race day was not very smart. Race 1> (5 laps) Saturday afternoon, started on grid 27, gear shifting problem hard to down shift then stuck in 4th gear, finish 27th. Packed up bike and went home before anyone had a chance to point and laugh. Found gear shift problem was caused due to the shift shaft adjuster screw came loose, even though the locknut tabs were on. Locktited it and stuck it back in. Changed engine oil Found another crack on the frame, repaired it with silver/brass rod and oxy. Check plugs , too rich so leaned off on needle & air screw. Change plugs from B9ES to B8ES . Checked it over and loaded it back on trailer, saw last few laps of Stoner's race win. Sunday arrive at track 8.15am in time for riders brief. Got a loan set of tyre warmers, Lots of XS 650 club members dropped in to say hello and good luck etc. thanks, sorry for not remembering names. I hope Geoff Bamford's misses, Louise will forgive me. Show & shine bikes looked great, I did not get over to check out the swap meeting.
Race 2> (5 laps) , started on grid 27 ,finished 21st The repair I did on the crack in frame not holding and found another crack near swing arm. Race 3>(6 laps) grid 21 finished 17th Frame crack growing. Last race "Tokyo Express" 350cc to 1300cc Post classic & Forgotten Era (4 laps) Finished 9th. My lap times improved every race, but unfortunately I was not on the pace. Forgotten Era Unlimited class....results..... 25 points 12th position Dave Rayner helped load bike up. Then I had a few drinks. I have a lot of work to do............................................. Ivan
Remco & Piet Laan in Holland sent these pics. Here some pictures of
the big bore 998XS (85mm bore x 88mm
stroke) from Piet Laan (Holland) who
also races it. Kim Anderson Mosport 08 #114 starts from front row on the grid , still in the lead going into turn 2 after a perfect holeshot start. Quickly made my way to the back of the pack after that ! finished 15th of 24 starters. Motor had tuning issues, and rider lost his edge. 5 sec. off the pace from last time at Mosport. This after taking a 1st and a 2nd in previous round in July. Ah, well, tis better to race and win just once, than to never have raced [ or won ] at all !
Hi, Terry Greetings from Canada. Hope you enjoy the attachment. Entered several vintage races this past season, kept it upright , placed as high as 5th, as poorly as second last, oh yeah and a DNF when the clutch basket disconnected from its shaft ! With a good rider - and mechanic - this bike could be a winner !
Dyno'd at 67 hp at the rear wheel, 48 lb.ft. Since then have installed new trick exhaust, going from 36 to 38mm Mikunis , see if we can't top 70hp - on pump gas. Already 10 hp more than my 1000cc Moto Guzzi ! I love this bike.
Hope all is well with you. Still waiting to see your finished xs project.
Kim Anderson Wakefield Park Tony Filmer went to Wakefield park for his first race on his RZ250 in superlights and unfortunately ended the first day injured after being high-sided at high speed after a rear brake lock-up on his tenth lap. Tony has done some damage to his shoulder apparently but will recover to race another day. I'm sure I can speak for the rest of the club in wishing him a speedy recovery. Better luck next time Tony.
The bike wearing a few
scars from the accident. What's Ivan's
push bike helmet doing on the
seat? As you all probably know by now some of our members are into racing. Ivan Hoey is one of the most prominent at the moment and competes in Forgotten Era Unlimited and this year (2006) finished third in the N.S.W. championship. Another of our former club members Mick Muldoon finished second in the Post Classic Unlimited championship for 2006.
When you consider both these blokes compete against some pretty stiff opposition like the ex Graeme Crosby and the ex Wayne Gardener bikes which are both 4 cylinder 1000cc plus machines that is a fantastic achievement. Tony Filmer is just starting his racing ambitions this weekend at Wakefield Park on a RZ250 Yamaha and I'm sure we all wish him luck. Herb Conlin has a stable of XS650 dirt racing machines which also do very well wherever they appear. We also have Matt Moloney from Warrnambool in Victoria who is about to start racing is new wasp outfit with XS power. In South Australia we have Walter Preisig who is very well known in racing circles for his "Offline" suspension business and his world class wasp offroad racing outfits and his circuit racer, all XS powered. Also in South Australia we have Wayne Townsend, another offroader.
Friends in other countries include Richard Cheetham Kim Anderson Hey, 2 wheel fans. Yup, that's me on the xs650 ! Spent 3 days at Shannonville, racing school, a 2 hr endurance race plus my first time ever in Period 2 [ up to '72 ] heat races. Sunday final qualified 12th out of 18, finished 12th, stayed upright, nothing broke. Happy Father's Day indeed ! My endurance riding partner Ron Pfaff took 3rd place honors in Period 1 middleweight on his 1965 Honda cb450. His head's so big now he can't get his helmet back on !
The rephase motor still shakes a lot. I think all the extra bang from the 50-60% hp boost negates the smoothing effect of the 270deg. crank. I'm running 5000-8000 continuously and still feel like I'm short-shifting. Unbelievable torque. I can light up the rear tire in first just with throttle roll-on. Very impressive for a '72. For those I haven't told already, Cycle Canada magazine is doing a 2 page feature article on the bike in an upcoming issue. Guess they like it too. 53 year wait for my 10 minutes of fame . Have to go get fitted for a larger helmet now. Kim There are many others who have racing in their blood and if they would to send me some pics and a biography of their exploits I would be happy to put them on this page. Just send them to xs650@xs650.org.au
